National Assessment

The National Assessment of students’ achievements in the primary and secondary education is an external evaluation which provides reliable information about students’ knowledge and abilities at the end of the first cycle (fourth grade) and upon completion of primary education. It also provides information about the factors which influence students’ achievements. Until now, the National Assessment in the Republic of Macedonia has been carried out only as a project.
The first national assessment at the end of the first cycle of primary education was carried out in 2001, as part of the project Assessment and Examinations in Macedonia. It comprised school subjects, such as: Macedonian language, Albanian language and Math. In 2002, a report was issued on the test results.
Also, standards for students’ achievements were set for the first cycle of primary education for the following subjects:Macedonian language, Albanian language and Math. These were determined by the descriptions of the quality and the quantity of students’ knowledge, as well as through the number of students expected to meet them.
There are three levels of achievement: a minimum standard (90%), medium standard (75%) and high standard (10%).
In May 2006, measurements of the students’ knowledge and abilities for the subjects Science and Society in the fourth grade were carried out for the first time. The report on the student results was issued in 2007.
National assessment of students’ achievement in the eighth grade was conducted for the first time in May 2006 for the following subjects: Macedonian language, Albanian language and Math. The report for the students’ results was issued in 2007.
